*ed note: all comments in "quotes" denote direct quotes from Sascha K.

Part I : About KMFDM

     1. What does KMFDM mean?

     Kein Mehrheit Fr Die Mitleid
(which loosely translated means: no pity for the majority)
And yes, it is proper German to say "Kein Mitleid Fr Die Mehrheit", but the question refers to KMFDM, not proper German.

     2. Who is in KMFDM ?

          A. Who are the founding members of KMFDM and where are they now?

Sascha Konietzko and painter/multimedia artist Udo Sturm founded KMFDM on February 29th, 1984, in Paris, France. Sascha is still with KMFDM and Udo is "somewhere in Germany still being a painter and multimedia artist."

          B. Who has contributed to KMFDM and what have they contributed?

"Everybody that ever appeared on our recordings has contributed in one way or another:

Aidan Hughes/Brute: Uncounted covers and video-animations
Raymond Watts: British multi-instrumentalist and singer
Jr. Blackmail: Dutch cynicist and poet
Dorona Alberti: Everybody's sweetheart and vocalist from the Netherlands
Chris Connelly: Scotsman. Fini Tribe, RevCo, etc. ... vocalist
William Rieflin: Multi-instrumentalist and drummer of Ministry, RevCo etc...

          ... to name a few"
Other contributers include: Mark Durante, Christine Siewert, Rudolph Naomi, Morgan Adjei, Sigrid Meyer, Chrissie DeWinter, Mike Jensen, Jennifer Ginsberg, F.M. Einheit, Nicole Blackman, John Van Eaton, Cheryl Wilson, Bruce Breckenfeld, Bruce Bendinger, Jack Kramer, Mike Cichowicz, Steve Finckle, Bob Samborski, Ron Lowe, Jim Christiansen, Jeff Olson, Fritz Whitney, Chris Shepard (engineering and mixing), Chris Zander (typework for the album covers)

          C. Who is currently in KMFDM ?

          Sascha Konietzko
          En Esch
          Gnter Schulz
          Tim Skold

     3. Tour information

          A. When has KMFDM toured in the past?

          1989-90 Ministry/KMFDM /Various - "The Mind is a ...Tour" (U.S.)
1990 KMFDM /Thrill Kill Kult - "Nave Tour" (Europe)
          1991 KMFDM /Braindead Sound Machine - "Split Tour" (U.S)
          1992 KMFDM /Barkmarket - "Aloha Jerry Brown Tour" (U.S.)

          1997 KMFDM /Pig/Rammstein/Noxious Emotion - "Tour '97" (U.S. & Europe)

          B. When will KMFDM be touring again?

The tour that was originally planned for the Spring is now off due to lack of interest overseas, and therefore no continuation of the US tour is planned.

     4. What equipment does KMFDM use?

"Basically everything we can get our hands on. We prefer AKAI S 3000 samplers to EMAX II, we love Sequential Circuit Pro-One, Doepfer MS 404, Clavia Nord-Lead, Quasimidi Rave-O-Lution, Korg Monopoly, Roland TR 808 & 909, TB 303, SH 101 & JD 800. This is only the beginning of a list too long to be of any interest."

     5. What is KMFDM trying to accomplish with their music?

According to Sascha: "We take what we are doing very seriously, but that doesn't mean that we are serious about everything that we're doing. The drive behind this band was never like, 'Let's start a band and get, like a good record deal, and make lots of money' It's more like we want to see how far we can go..in terms of ripping the system.."

Part III: Miscellaneous

     1. What is the story behind Nave and Nave/Hell to Go?

"We used a sample of Carl Orff's 'Carma Burana' (O Fortuna was the track to be exact) for the song "Liebesleid" and didn't get clearance for it. (Yeah, beginners sometimes make mistakes...) The publishing of said works had a problem after it's been out for 3 years and asked us to stop manufacture so we remixed the track and re-released it on Nave/Hell to Go with other remixes of the original tracks on Nave."

     2. What is this "Retro" CD we've been hearing about?

          A. What is the story behind Retro?

"It was ill-conceived by TVT as a promo for KMFDM to be sent to radio stations to 'alert them of KMFDM 's long history and prolific output, in order to get airplay for tracks off Xtort.'
"We disagreed with this policy, but were informed about the fact too late... a couple of 1000 copies had already been manufactured (with incorrect credits on top of everything else...) and we told 'em to shove it and prohibited any further use."

          B. How many copies were released?

"None, there were a few leaked out..."

          C. Will it ever be released to retail in any form?

          "No."

          D. How can I get a copy?

It was sold in various locations on "Tour '97". http://www.kmfdm.net briefly had a notice in early November 1997 about TVT not allowing the on-tour sale of their "Retro" stock. Several days later, it was removed. After that, KMFDM proceeded to sell it on tour again due to high demand.

     3. What's KMFDM doing now?

          A. When will a new album be released?

According to the official website, the next few months will be spent working on a new album.

          B. What is the KMFDM /Prey connection?

KMFDM is working on the soundtrack for the upcoming PC game by 3D Realms entitled "Prey". More information can be found at http://www.kmfdm.net/prey.html.

C. When can we expect a new single?

A new single with remixes of MEGALOMANIAC, ANARCHY and UNFIT is due out on February 3, 1998.

     4. Where's the long awaited KMFDM video compilation?

It is finished and currently available from the KMFDM site as well as the WaxTrax!/TVT Records site . The videos for MORE & FASTER, NAVE, VOGUE, MONEY, A DRUG AGAINST WAR, JUKE-JOINT JEZEBEL (Manga) and SON OF A GUN all can be found on the video, along with live versions of DISOBEDIENCE, GODLIKE and MORE & FASTER.

     5. Why is KMFDM so anti-MTV?

"MTV is an insult to the world"

     6. What is KMFDM 's opinion on bootlegs?

"We have no problem with a 'souvenir' type Walkman recording. We do have a problem if these recordings pop up commercially for horrendous prices like 'Operation KMFDM '" *ed note: if you know anything about Hurricane Records - who they are and where to find them, email Sascha at kmfdm@kmfdm.net

     7. What does "UAIOE" stand for?

According to Sascha: "we all need a lil' secret, don't we? if we lifted the blanket from everything and all became blatantly obvious, if painters and writers would have to interpret and explain their works, the world would be too boring. what do YOU think it should mean?"

     8. What is "Apart"?

"apart" was one of the working titles of the album that was finally released as "money"

     9. What is "Aloha"?

"it was a bunch of live-recordings that got lost in a big fire when a studio burnt down."

     10. What about the Internet?

          A. What does KMFDM think of the fans on the internet?
"I am in touch with literally hundreds of people over the net. They are an integral part of our fanbase. I read all and answer most of my e-mail personally. Sometimes up to several hundreds a day..."

          B. Do the members read alt.music.kmfdm or rec.music.industrial?

Sascha occasionally posts to rec.music.industrial or alt.music.kmfdm when a big happening occurs. As of late, he has been posting a weekly Q&A to alt.music.kmfdm and http://www.kmfdm.net/faq.html. He recently went so far as to turn the background of the official page white one day to prove his identity after a slew of impersonations.

     11. Is it true that "Opium" will be released?

     According to http://www.kmfdm.net:

"APPARENTLY SOME OF THE MASTER-TAPES FOR 'OPIUM' HAVE BEEN FOUND IN A GERMAN STUDIO-VAULT. SASCHA IS AWAITING THEIR ARRIVAL TO DETERMINE THE TRACKS CONTAINED AND THE CONDITION THAT THEY ARE IN...IF RE-MASTERING APPEARS TO BE FEASIBLE, WE [KMFDM ] WILL CONSIDER TO RELEASE THE LONG-LOST MATERIAL."

     12. What are we supposed to call the album with the pictures in the title?

In order to make asking for/talking about the new album easier, titles such as "Anger," "Curse," and "Wurst" have been suggested, but Sascha has confirmed that none of the above are actual titles. According to Sascha, "...it is simply an unspeakable title, universally understandable though, kinda like sign-language." According to En Esch, "It's like a curse out of a comic book."
